Gyeongsangbuk-do to increase monthly honor allowance for veterans

The Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council's Administrative, Health, and Welfare Committee has passed an amendment to increase the monthly honor allowance for war veterans. The proposed change will raise the payment from 100,000 KRW to 120,000 KRW per month.

Proposed by Provincial Councilor Heo Ji-hoon, the amendment aims to provide more realistic support for the 13,766 eligible recipients in the province, which includes Korean War veterans, Vietnam War veterans, and families of fallen soldiers. The move follows similar increases in other regions, such as Seoul and Busan, where allowances are higher.

If the amendment passes the final plenary session on September 3, the new rates are expected to take effect on January 1 next year. Councilor Heo emphasized the urgency of providing enhanced respect and support while veterans are still living, noting the natural decline in the veteran population due to aging.
