Gyeongsangbuk-do to industrialize bluefin tuna aquaculture
Gyeongsangbuk-do is moving to industrialize bluefin tuna aquaculture to establish a stable production and distribution system. This initiative follows a significant surge in catches, which rose from 159 tons in 2023 to 528 tons this year—a 3.3-fold increase over three years.
The rapid increase in catches, including a period in June where 309 tons were caught in just three days, has highlighted challenges in maintaining freshness, managing price fluctuations, and controlling shipments. To address these issues, the province held an interim report meeting for a research project on bluefin tuna industrialization, involving fisheries cooperatives, local fishermen, seafood companies, and the National Institute of Fisheries Science.
While the province has previously supported on-board bloodletting training and the expansion of ultra-low temperature (-60°C) freezing facilities, officials determined that aquaculture is necessary to regulate production timing and move away from total reliance on natural catches. The research project, which analyzes international aquaculture cases and market trends, is expected to conclude in December. Following this, the province plans to discuss support measures and institutional improvements with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
