Gyeongsangnam-do issues high water temperature warning for all coastal waters
A high water temperature warning has been expanded to cover all waters in Gyeongsangnam-do, from Namhae-gun to Geoje-si, due to ongoing heatwaves. The average surface water temperature in the region has reached 28.7 degrees Celsius, which is 6.5 degrees higher than the same period last year.
Significant damage to aquaculture has already been reported. In the Tongyeong, Namhae, and Hadong areas, 44 fishing households have reported the loss of approximately 1.1 million fish, including rockfish and mullet, as well as 95 lines of sea squirts. In Tongyeong alone, 19 households reported losses involving 1 million fish and 295 lines of sea squirts.
In response, Gyeongsangnam-do held an emergency video conference to coordinate countermeasures. To minimize losses, the province has been conducting emergency releases of farmed fish; so far, 74 households have participated, releasing 5.78 million fish. Authorities are also monitoring for potential red tide outbreaks, as small-scale red tide belts have been observed near Tongyeong.
In Chungnam, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, Hwang Jong-woo, inspected offshore cage farms in Boryeong to assess the situation in Cheonsu Bay, where water temperatures reached 28.5 degrees Celsius. The Ministry is encouraging cooperation between local governments and fishers to manage the crisis.
