Gyeongsangnam-do officials urge public institution relocation

Gyeongsangnam-do Governor Park Wan-soo and Democratic Party lawmakers representing the region have issued a joint statement to advocate for balanced national development and the protection of regional interests.

The group is calling on the central government to facilitate the second phase of public institution relocation, emphasizing that these moves should align with Gyeongsangnam-do’s strategic industries, such as shipbuilding, defense, nuclear energy, and aerospace. They specifically requested that the headquarters of integrated power public enterprises be located in the Gyeongnam Innovation City to maximize industrial synergy and efficiency.

Additionally, the leaders expressed strong opposition to moving the Naval Academy from Jinhae, citing its 80-year history and the concentration of naval education and operational functions in the area. The provincial government and lawmakers also met to discuss securing the 2025 national budget, aiming to protect existing funds and secure additional support for projects including small modular reactor (SMR) testing centers and future mobility platforms.
