Gymnasium Wall Collapse in Salvárcar Sparks Safety Outcry
On Saturday, a section of the wall at a gym under construction in the Deportivo Salvárcar complex collapsed after strong winds, prompting alarm among local residents. The project, part of a participatory budgeting scheme, was reported to be 55% complete with an investment of 8.6 million pesos.
Municipal President Héctor Ortiz Orpinel and Public Works Director Daniel González García had inspected the site on June 30, noting walls, roofing and metal structure. Despite the recent supervision, neighbors claim the collapse resulted from substandard construction, citing a lack of reinforcement material. Resident Lorenzo Reyes Olivas described workers stacking blocks without proper support, warning that the failure could have been fatal if people were present. He urged authorities to conduct a thorough technical inspection of the entire structure.
Heavy machinery is now being used to remove the fallen blocks while the community awaits an official response on the safety of the gymnasium.
