Gynaecologists advocate for partner presence in labour rooms

Maternal health experts are recommending that husbands, partners, or close relatives be present in labour rooms during delivery or caesarean sections to improve pregnancy outcomes. Medical professionals suggest that a trusted companion can help pregnant women cope with the demands of childbirth by providing emotional reassurance and reducing anxiety.

Professor Chris Aimakhu of the University of Ibadan noted that companionship during labour is part of modern medical practice globally. He cited the World Health Organization Labour Care Guide, which encourages the presence of a companion to provide emotional support and physical comfort, such as assisting with massage or breathing techniques.

Beyond emotional benefits, experts state that having a companion can improve communication with medical staff, safeguard against maltreatment, and facilitate bonding with the newborn.
