Gynecological cancer risks and prevention strategies highlighted
Medical experts are highlighting the diverse risk factors and prevention methods for gynecological cancers. While cervical cancer rates are decreasing due to screening programs, endometrial cancer incidence is rising, linked to increasing obesity rates. Key risk factors include HPV infection, obesity, smoking, poor nutrition, genetics, and age.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer. Experts note that while most HPV infections are cleared by the immune system, high-risk types like HPV 16 and 18 can lead to cancer over time. Vaccination is cited as the most effective prevention tool, with recommendations for children aged 9–13 and adults up to age 26.
In Turkey, cancer screening services are provided free of charge through KETEM (Cancer Early Diagnosis, Screening and Training Centers). Early detection of cervical cancer is highly effective, with a 100 percent cure rate if caught in the early stages, potentially avoiding intensive treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy.
