Febrasgo specialist addresses sexual health during menopause

Gynecologist Jussimara Souza Steglich, representing the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Febrasgo), states that sexual complaints during menopause—such as vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse, and loss of libido—should not be dismissed as inevitable consequences of aging.

Steglich emphasizes that sexual health must be integrated into women's care throughout all life stages. She warns against the common medical error of assuming older patients are no longer sexually active, which often leads to these symptoms being ignored during consultations. Additionally, social taboos frequently prevent women from discussing these issues with doctors.

Treatment options include hormonal therapies, lifestyle changes such as regular physical activity and balanced nutrition, and multidisciplinary approaches to address physical issues like pelvic floor muscle contractions. Steglich notes that pain can also stem from underlying conditions like endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease. In Brazil, approximately 30 million women are in the menopausal stage, with data indicating that 82% experience symptoms that impact their quality of life.
