Győr installs 28 bat houses to support local wildlife

As part of the ‘Green Steps’ project, 28 specialized bat houses have been installed at various locations across Győr, Hungary. The initiative aims to provide safe shelter for at least one thousand protected bats.

Deputy Mayor Dr. Renáta Balog-Farkas noted that natural habitats such as tree hollows, caves, and rock crevices have significantly declined, forcing bats to seek refuge in human structures like attics and church towers. Modern building renovations and insulation often eliminate these makeshift habitats, necessitating artificial alternatives.

The project also emphasizes social solidarity, as the bat houses were constructed by carpenters residing in a rehabilitation home for the Homeless Aid Service. Technical support and equipment were provided by Győr-Szol Zrt., while experts from the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society and the Fertő-Hanság National Park Directorate assisted in selecting appropriate locations and ensuring environmentally friendly installation methods.
