György Cserhalmi supports Attila Vidnyánszky staying at National Theatre

Actor György Cserhalmi has stated that Attila Vidnyánszky should remain in his position as the head of the National Theatre of Hungary until his mandate expires in the summer of 2028. Cserhalmi argued that Vidnyánszky should serve under the same conditions as other theater directors, noting that the future necessity of the institution itself should be decided later.

The comments come amid an ongoing review of the National Theatre. Zoltán Tarr, the minister responsible for social relations and culture, previously characterized Vidnyánszky’s claims as untruthful and accused him of inciting hysteria rather than engaging in honest dialogue.

Cserhalmi also addressed recent tensions involving Ervin Nagy, a prominent actor and state secretary for culture. Cserhalmi criticized the current cultural policy, suggesting that since the change in government, individuals associated with previous political structures have been given renewed opportunities, citing changes at the University of Theatre and Film Arts (SZFE) as an example. He expressed skepticism regarding the authenticity of Nagy’s recent responses to his criticisms.
