György Cserhalmi to receive Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit

Actor György Cserhalmi will be awarded the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit during the national holiday on August 20, 2026. The announcement was made by Péter Magyar, noting that Cserhalmi is one of the highest state honors available.

Cserhalmi, a Kossuth Prize winner and designated ‘Actor of the Nation’, has a career spanning over five decades with appearances in more than 200 films and numerous stage productions. He is recognized for his historical significance, having read the 12-point opposition manifesto in front of the Hungarian Television building on March 15, 1989.

His professional background includes work with the National Theatre, Katona József Theatre, and the Hungarian Film Manufacturing Company. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Balázs Béla Prize and the Prima Prize.
