György Czigány: Hungarian media pioneer and music educator
György Czigány, a distinguished Hungarian writer, poet, journalist, and music director, would have celebrated his 95th birthday on August 12. A recipient of the Erkel Ferenc, Liszt Ferenc, and József Attila prizes, Czigány was a foundational figure in Hungarian radio and television.
He is most notably remembered for creating and hosting the legendary classical music quiz show ‘Ki nyer ma? – Játék és muzsika tíz percben’ (Who Wins Today? – Music and Games in Ten Minutes). Broadcast from the Astoria Hotel hall on Magyar Rádió for over three decades, the program aimed to foster public interest in classical music by challenging listeners to identify melodies by ear.
In addition to his radio career, Czigány held significant roles at Magyar Televízió, serving as a producer and studio manager for various music and arts programs. His professional life was characterized by his background as a trained pianist and his deep commitment to both music education and literature.
