György Kurtág celebrates 100th birthday with new opera premiere
Composer György Kurtág has reached his centenary, celebrating 100 years since his birth on February 19, 1926, in Lugoj, Romania. To mark the occasion, the chamber opera Die Stechardin premiered on February 20 at the Müpa Budapest in the Bartók Hall.
Kurtág, a central figure in European music over the last half-century, studied at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. His career has been defined by an intense, artisanal approach to music and a focus on the essential elements of sound. His recent operatic work follows a previous production at La Scala in Milan.
