Firefighter Konstantinos Laimoditis Dies in Gytheio Wildfire
On 29 July 2026 a 27‑year‑old firefighter, Konstantinos Laimoditis, serving as a sub‑officer of the Gytheio Fire Service, was found unconscious and without burns outside the perimeter of a wildfire in the Agéranos area of Laconia. He was taken by ambulance to the General Hospital of Sparta where his death was confirmed.
The cause of death is being investigated; early reports suggest pathological reasons rather than injuries from the fire. The blaze, which began on the same day and was linked to outdoor work, prompted the deployment of roughly 62 firefighters, 17 fire engines, two water‑bomber aircraft and one helicopter.
