Güzelyurt opens $10.4 million cold storage facility
A new $10.4 million cold storage integrated facility has been inaugurated in Güzelyurt, Northern Cyprus, to support the region's agricultural sector, particularly citrus production. The project was financed by the Republic of Türkiye and coordinated by the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB).
The facility features a total storage capacity of 15,000 tons, including 12 cold storage rooms and six frozen storage rooms. It is equipped with shock units and a solar energy system to maintain product quality and reduce post-harvest losses. Officials stated that the investment was prompted by previous storage shortages that caused economic difficulties for local producers.
Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and local leaders emphasized that the facility will provide farmers with greater marketing flexibility, allowing them to store products and sell them when market conditions are most favorable rather than being forced to sell immediately after harvest. The investment aims to strengthen the entire value chain from production to processing and export.
