GZM to purchase 16 new trains with 321 million PLN in EU funding

The Upper Silesian and Zagłębie Metropolis (GZM) has secured over 321.4 million PLN in European Union funding to purchase 16 modern electric multiple units (EMUs). This marks the first time in the history of the GZM that the metropolitan area will purchase its own rolling stock.

The project, valued at a total of 806.9 million PLN, is a foundational step toward the development of ‘Metrokolej’, a planned system of fast and frequent rail connections within the metropolis. The new trains are expected to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h and accommodate at least 380 passengers, including a minimum of 185 seated passengers.

Onboard amenities will include air conditioning, electrical outlets, bicycle storage, family zones, modern passenger information systems, and accessibility solutions for people with disabilities. The procurement is part of a collaboration with the Silesian Voivodeship, with both institutions planning to purchase 16 trains each, with the potential to expand the order by an additional 20 vehicles.
