Göztepe Museum displays trophy split in two after 1973 final

The Göztepe Museum currently displays a unique piece of Turkish football history: a trophy that was physically split in two following a controversial match in 1973.

During the final of a four-team tournament held in honor of former Göztepe player Reşat Selamioğlu at the İzmir Atatürk Stadium, Göztepe and Galatasaray were tied 2-2. In the 86th minute, a penalty was awarded to Galatasaray, which player Tuncay converted to secure a 3-2 victory.

Following the match, both clubs' management and players reached a consensus that the penalty decision was unjust. In a rare display of sportsmanship, neither side wished to claim the trophy exclusively. As a solution, the trophy was taken to the historic Kemeraltı Bazaar in İzmir and cut in half. One portion was given to Galatasaray, while the other half was kept by Göztepe and is now exhibited in their museum at Gürsel Aksel Stadium.
