Hộ linh tráng sĩ faces box office challenges in Vietnam

The Vietnamese martial arts historical film ‘Hộ linh tráng sĩ - Bí ẩn mộ vua Đinh’ is facing commercial challenges, potentially ending actor Tuấn Trần’s streak of consecutive 100-billion-dong hits. As of September 9, the film has earned approximately 34.6 billion VND, falling short of the estimated 180 billion VND required to break even. The film’s box office momentum has slowed following the end of a long holiday, and it currently sits fourth in the Box Office Vietnam rankings.

Critics have noted issues with the film’s storytelling, citing a lack of a clear central message and fragmented plotlines. Meanwhile, the film has drawn historical interest for its depiction of the era of the 12 Warlords and the rise of Đinh Tiên Hoàng (Đinh Bộ Lĩnh). Historian Trần Vân Anh noted that the film utilizes historical elements surrounding the unification of the country by the Đinh dynasty to frame its martial arts narrative.
