H5N1 mRNA vaccine enters phase three clinical trials
Phase three clinical trials have commenced for an mRNA vaccine targeting H5N1, a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza. The use of mRNA technology aims to accelerate vaccine development and production, addressing concerns raised by the COVID-19 pandemic where the one-year gap between virus detection and vaccine availability resulted in significant global loss of life and economic disruption.
H5N1 is currently spreading among birds and various mammal species, including dairy cattle in the United States. While efficient human-to-human transmission has not yet been established, over 100 human infections have been recorded since the start of 2024. Epidemiologists are particularly concerned about the clade 2.3.4.4b variant, which has achieved near-global distribution, including detections in Antarctica.
Efforts to control the virus include mass vaccination of poultry, such as ducks in France, which has helped limit outbreaks. Experts, including Richard Pebody of the UK Health Security Agency, emphasize that influenza remains the most likely candidate for a future pandemic, making proactive preparation essential to prevent further mutations and adaptations in animal populations.
