Ha Young faces controversy over great-grandfather's pro-Japanese history
South Korean actress Ha Young is facing intense public scrutiny following revelations regarding her great-grandfather, Ahn Sang Ho, and his alleged pro-Japanese activities during the Japanese colonial period. The controversy erupted after Ha Young mentioned her family's four-generation medical lineage on a variety show, noting that her great-grandfather was a physician who treated Emperor Gojong.
Research by the Minjok Munje Yeonguso (Institute for Research in Minjok Issues) confirmed that Ahn Sang Ho was involved in several pro-Japanese organizations, including the Daejeong Friendship Association, and held positions in colonial administration-linked groups. Additional claims have circulated online suggesting his wife was the daughter of a Japanese military official.
Ha Young issued a handwritten apology, stating she was unaware of the full historical context of her family history and expressed regret for speaking lightly about it. The controversy has impacted her professional life, causing emotional distress during the filming of her new drama, ‘Winning with Hope’, and leading to the suspension of certain advertisements.
Political figures, including lawmaker Kim Yong Man, have commented that while individuals cannot choose their ancestors, their future actions and historical awareness are what define their character. Meanwhile, some industry figures have called for greater respect for descendants of independence activists in future casting decisions.
