Esteban Ocon confirms free agent status for 2027 F1 season

Esteban Ocon has confirmed he is a “free agent” for the 2027 Formula 1 season, signaling a likely departure from the Haas F1 Team. Speaking ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the 30-year-old French driver stated that while discussions are ongoing, certain factors regarding his future are “out of my control.” Ocon emphasized his desire to remain in Formula 1, noting that he is not yet satisfied with his career achievements despite nearly 200 race starts.

Reports indicate that Haas has already informed Ocon of the decision not to retain him for 2027. The team is currently evaluating several candidates to partner with Oliver Bearman, who is expected to remain with the squad. Leading contenders for the vacant seat include Ferrari junior and Formula 2 standout Rafael Camara, as well as Leonardo Fornaroli and Ryo Hirakawa. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has stated that the team's priority is selecting the fastest available drivers, regardless of their affiliations with junior academies.

Ocon’s current season has been marked by challenges, including inconsistent car performance and being outscored by Bearman. Despite these difficulties, Ocon maintains that his individual performance has not been the issue and remains committed to delivering results for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
