Habiganj resident ordered to perform 200 prayers for mobile theft

In Madhabpur, Habiganj, a young man was detained by locals in Noapara Bazar on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone. Rather than resorting to physical violence, the crowd decided to punish the individual by requiring him to perform 200 rakats of voluntary (nafl) prayers.

The incident, which was captured on video and circulated on social media, has sparked debate regarding vigilante justice. While some viewed the decision as a peaceful alternative to physical assault, local officials and legal experts criticized the act. The Chairman of Noapara Union Parishad stated that the community should have handed the suspect to the police, and an Assistant Public Prosecutor noted that the authority to judge and punish lies solely with the judiciary.
