Hackney Islamic Community Centre under investigation

The Charity Commission has opened a regulatory compliance case into the Hackney Islamic Community Centre, also known as Masjid Daar Al-Hadeeth, following the publication of controversial sermons on its YouTube channel.

In the recorded lectures, preacher Yasin Munye discusses religious teachings regarding domestic discipline and homosexuality. Munye suggests that husbands should advise, boycott in bed, and physically discipline wives through light hitting if they are disobedient to their husbands. He also describes homosexual acts as a crime that results in execution under Sharia law, noting that scholars differ on the specific methods of execution.

The National Secular Society referred the material to regulators. The mosque holds charitable status, which provides tax exemptions on its income, which was reported at approximately £191,097 for the year ending March 2025.
