Hadano City releases captured bear into mountains after urban sightings
Hadano City in Kanagawa Prefecture has released a captured male Asiatic black bear into the remote Tanzawa Mountains following sightings near urban areas. The bear, measuring 1.36 meters in length, was captured on October 19 near Kobozan Park.
Rather than culling the animal, the city opted to release it for protection, a decision influenced by the fact that Asiatic black bears are generally considered a protected species in Kanagawa Prefecture, where an estimated 80 individuals reside. The bear was fitted with a tracking device to monitor its movement.
On October 23, the same bear was captured on camera crossing near Kobozan Park. Due to the animal's tendency to return to the same location, the city has closed access routes to the park and issued warnings to residents. Officials noted that while release is preferred, culling remains an option if the bear continues to show high attachment to human-populated areas and poses a significant risk to public safety.
