Hadrianoi Ancient City uncovered in Bursa, Turkey

Archaeological excavations in the Orhaneli district of Bursa have uncovered the remains of the ancient Roman city of Hadrianoi. Established around 123 AD by Emperor Hadrian, the site is located on the southern slopes of Uludağ.

According to the Bursa Museum Directorate, the city was founded by the Emperor during his travels through Anatolia, potentially driven by his passion for hunting in the region's rich wildlife. The site's location was also strategic due to its proximity to thermal springs and its position on an ancient transport route that connected Harmancık to Kütahya and Balıkesir—a route that remains in use today.

Initial excavations, conducted under the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and advised by Professor Derya Şahin of Bursa Uludağ University, have revealed a large monumental structure. While its exact function is still being determined, researchers believe it may have served as an agora (a public marketplace) or a gymnasium (a center for social and educational activities). Ongoing work aims to expand the excavation area to better define the city's boundaries and historical significance.
