Haelwyn Adams Diagnosed with Terminal Colon Cancer While Pregnant

Haelwyn Adams, a 41‑year‑old expectant mother, endured years of stomach pain that doctors repeatedly attributed to period pain, IBS, stress or hormonal effects from IVF. After a routine 20‑week pregnancy scan, a scan revealed a malignant tumour in her colon with a rare mutation that had already spread to her liver, confirming stage 4 colon cancer.

Faced with a choice between terminating the pregnancy to allow immediate tumour removal and chemotherapy, or continuing the pregnancy while surgeons removed as much of the primary tumour as possible, Adams chose to carry the baby to term. She gave birth at 32 weeks to a daughter, Magnolia Sunshine, who was immediately separated for intensive care while Adams began treatment. Adams now faces a terminal prognosis, describing the decision as "the easiest" despite the severe health challenges.

The case highlights the dangers of dismissing serious symptoms in young patients and the complex medical decisions involved when cancer is diagnosed during pregnancy.
