Haenam County Council faces criticism over lack of debate in first session
The 10th Haenam County Council held its first session of administrative inquiries, but concerns have been raised regarding the council's ability to monitor and check the executive branch. Despite face-to-face questioning of County Governor Myeong Hyeon-gwan, the proceedings were criticized for being little more than scripted exchanges similar to written inquiries, lacking substantive debate or concrete commitments to budget allocations.
Key issues addressed included the management of public facilities and support for the mobility-impaired. Council member Kim Mi-gyeong emphasized the need for rigorous post-management of the county's 86 public facilities to prevent tax waste, noting that maintenance costs are projected to reach 147 billion won through September 2026. Governor Myeong responded that the county would conduct regular inspections and consolidate inefficient facilities.
Additionally, Council member Noh Jung-hee highlighted the difficulties faced by the mobility-impaired, noting that the current ratio of one specialized taxi per 25 users leads to average wait times of 35 minutes. Governor Myeong pledged to review real-time call reception methods and improve regional dispatch conditions to enhance accessibility.
