Haenam County to host academic conference for Jeolla Right Naval Headquarters
Haenam County has announced it will host an academic conference on November 6 at the Uldolsori Myeongryang Hall in the Usuyeong Tourist Area. The event, themed ‘2026 Haenam: The Utilization and Value of Jeolla Right Naval Headquarters’, commemorates the 10th anniversary of the site being designated as a national historic site.
The conference aims to share excavation results and re-examine the historical significance of the Jeolla Right Naval Headquarters (Jeolla Usuyeong) within the Joseon Dynasty's naval defense system. Key presentation topics include the investigation status of the fortress structure, spatial composition, changes in the coastal defense system during the early Joseon period, and strategies for the preservation and restoration of the site.
Located in Munnae-myeon, the Jeolla Right Naval Headquarters was designated as National Historic Site No. 535 in 2016. Established in 1440, it served as the command center for the Jeolla province navy until 1895. The site is considered a critical strategic location where the West and South Seas meet and served as a rear base for Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the Battle of Myeongnyang.
