Haenam reports high traffic fatality rate despite fewer accidents

Haenam County has recorded a higher traffic fatality rate compared to neighboring Yeongam and Muan counties, despite having a lower total number of accidents. Last year, Haenam reported 271 accidents resulting in 19 deaths, whereas Yeongam and Muan saw 347 and 299 accidents with 12 and 9 deaths, respectively.

Local authorities and the Haenam Police attribute the high fatality rate to the region's unique road environment. Major arteries, such as National Routes 13 and 18, frequently intersect with village access roads, creating visibility issues and risks when high-speed vehicles encounter local traffic.

An aging population further exacerbates the danger. Approximately 65.5% of traffic fatalities in Haenam involve individuals aged 65 or older. Due to limited public transportation, many elderly residents rely on motorcycles, bicycles, and electric scooters, which offer no physical protection during collisions.
