Hafnarfjörður municipality announces 23 job cuts
The Hafnarfjörður town council has approved a series of restructuring measures aimed at addressing the municipality’s tight financial situation. The plan involves cutting 23 jobs, which corresponds to 21.6 full-time positions, though three employees have been offered alternative roles within the town.
The measures will impact all six municipal departments, including family and child affairs, education and public health, service and development, finance, administration, and environment and planning. The restructuring is expected to result in a permanent annual saving of 330 million ISK starting in 2028.
In addition to staff reductions, the municipality will implement hiring restrictions and establish a centralized recruitment committee. Furthermore, the salaries of senior management will be frozen for two years. The administration noted that the cuts primarily target management, specialist, and internal service roles rather than frontline essential services.
