Hagia Sophia underground tunnels of 9 km confirmed by Turkish Minister

Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy has confirmed the existence of an extensive underground tunnel network beneath Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, totaling approximately 9 kilometers in length. The discovery validates long-standing urban legends regarding hidden passages under the historic site. These tunnels are estimated to be roughly 1,600 years old.

Ersoy stated that restoration and cleaning efforts are currently underway for accessible sections, though some areas remain blocked due to collapses. Once these works are completed and safety is assessed, the government may consider opening secure portions of the tunnels to the public.

In addition to the tunnel discovery, the Minister highlighted ongoing comprehensive restoration and structural reinforcement projects at Hagia Sophia. These efforts, described as the most extensive in the history of the Turkish Republic, aim to preserve the 1,500-year-old structure for future generations. Completed works include restorations of the tombs, the clock tower, and the floor of the portico, as well as reinforcement of the northeastern minaret. Ongoing work continues on the main dome, including mosaic maintenance and structural strengthening.
