Hagia Sophia undergoes major restoration and dome reinforcement
Comprehensive restoration, conservation, and reinforcement works are progressing at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque in Istanbul. The project, described as one of the most extensive in the history of the Republic, has entered a new phase focusing on the dome structures.
Work on the main dome involves the removal and repair of lead coverings, structural reinforcement, and the use of a 43.5-meter steel platform to facilitate mosaic conservation. To protect the interior mosaics and the structure from seasonal weather conditions, a temporary steel roof covered with flame-retardant grey protective tarpaulin has been installed. This grey covering was chosen to harmonize with the appearance of the original lead.
Additionally, structural analysis and modeling have identified a need for reinforcement in the eastern semi-dome. New works will begin there, utilizing a steel platform to ensure safe access for both structural strengthening and the conservation of the interior mosaics and decorative patterns. Despite these extensive technical operations, the site will remain open for worship and visits through temporary arrangements.
