Hai Phong buries 56 martyrs and victims of French colonial era
Authorities in Hai Phong held a solemn ceremony to honor and bury 56 sets of remains belonging to martyrs and citizens who died during the resistance against French colonial forces. The remains were recently discovered at the Ma Chia area in Vinh Bao commune.
Historical records indicate that between 1949 and 1951, French forces operated the Mai Son outpost along Route 10, conducting raids and killings. Many victims were tortured and buried in mass graves behind the outpost. Among those recovered, eight individuals have been officially recognized as martyrs, while others remain unidentified.
The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Politburo member Tran Sy Thanh and Hai Phong Party Secretary Le Ngoc Chau, alongside local military representatives, veterans, and grieving family members. For many families, the discovery provides closure after more than 70 years of maintaining symbolic graves in hopes of finding their relatives.
