Hai Phong deploys Starlink satellite internet to remote islands
Hai Phong authorities in Vietnam have partnered with Starlink to provide satellite internet services to remote islands, specifically in the Cat Hai and Bach Long Vi special administrative areas. The initiative, part of the Hai Phong Digital Transformation Forum 2026, involves the deployment of 10 Starlink terminals: six in Cat Hai and four in Bach Long Vi.
FPT International Telecom is coordinating with Starlink Services Vietnam to manage installation and technical support. The initial rollout includes six months of free service for the deployed units. In Cat Hai, equipment has been installed at key locations including the People’s Committee headquarters, ferry terminals, and various stations to ensure connectivity where terrestrial infrastructure is limited.
Elon Musk highlighted the project on his social media platform, X, stating, “Starlink brings Internet access to remote places.” The satellite service is intended to support government operations, tourism, and local businesses, while also serving as a critical backup for disaster response and search and rescue operations during storms or when ground-based telecommunications fail.
