Hailuoto traffic increases significantly after fixed connection opens

Traffic to the island of Hailuoto has increased significantly following the opening of a fixed road connection on June 29, 2026. Data released by the Northern Finland Growth Center indicates that vehicle numbers have multiplied compared to the previous ferry-based service.

Traffic counts conducted in early June, while the ferry was still in operation, showed an average of 742 vehicles per day at the Vaski counting point. By late July, after the fixed connection had been active for approximately one month, this figure rose to an average of 3,125 vehicles per day. At the Marjaniemi counting point, daily traffic increased nearly fivefold, rising from 476 to 2,377 vehicles.

Peak traffic was recorded on Wednesday, July 29, with 3,836 vehicles passing the Vaski point and 2,992 at Marjaniemi. Cyclist numbers also saw an increase at both locations. While traffic levels fluctuate seasonally and are highest during the summer months, the Northern Finland Growth Center will continue to monitor development.
