Hainan high school implements mandatory state news viewing
A high school in Hainan Province, China, has reportedly added a compulsory half-hour of state television to its students' daily schedule. According to screenshots of a timetable from Haikou No. 4 Secondary School, senior students are required to watch the flagship news programme, Xinwen Lianbo, from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
The school day is described as highly demanding, beginning at 6:20 am and continuing until 11:00 pm. The addition of the news programme occurs before two lengthy evening study sessions. This development has sparked debate regarding the role of political messaging in education, as China's Education Law mandates adherence to the leadership of the Communist Party of China and incorporates 'Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era' into its socialist education principles.
