Hainan seeks to strengthen tourism cooperation with Taiwan
Tourism industry representatives from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao participated in a weeklong exchange program in Hainan from September 20 to 26, 2026. The delegation, which included 33 members from major Taiwanese industry organizations such as the Taiwan Travel Business Association and the Taiwan Self-Drive Tourism Association, conducted an extensive tour of the island to explore opportunities for cross-strait cultural and tourism cooperation.
Industry experts highlighted that while interest in Hainan remains high—with 44,000 Taiwanese tourists visiting in the first eight months of the year—growth has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. A primary obstacle identified is the lack of direct flights. Since 2020, direct routes from Taipei and Kaohsiung to Haikou and Sanya have been suspended, forcing travelers to transit through Hong Kong, which increases travel time and reduces convenience.
Participants suggested several niche markets for development, including medical and wellness tourism, golf tourism, and specialized cycling or motorcycle tours. Industry leaders noted that restoring direct flights could significantly tap into Taiwan's large golf enthusiast market and attract more family travelers during festive periods like the Mid-Autumn Festival.
