Hainanese chicken rice: Origins and culinary significance
Hainanese chicken rice is a staple dish deeply associated with Singaporean gastronomy and culinary heritage. Originating from the Hainanese community that migrated to Southeast Asia during the 19th and 20th centuries, the dish is linked to the Wenchang chicken preparation from Hainan, China.
The dish typically consists of tender chicken served with aromatic rice, which is cooked using chicken fat, broth, ginger, garlic, and pandan to concentrate flavor. It is traditionally accompanied by chili sauce, ginger, and soy sauce. While the National Heritage Board recognizes it as part of Singapore's food heritage, the dish has evolved through local and Cantonese influences, appearing in various forms across hawker centres and restaurants.
