Hair bond repair science and treatment effectiveness

The hair care industry is increasingly focused on “bond repair,” a term referring to the restoration of structural interactions that provide hair fiber with strength, shape, and resilience. Biochemist Jared Reynolds explains that hair is primarily composed of keratin proteins held together by various chemical interactions, including disulfide bonds, hydrogen bonds, and ionic or salt bonds.

Chemical processing, heat, and mechanical stress can cause complex damage, including oxidation, protein loss, and cuticle disruption. To address these issues, various professional and consumer products have been developed. For example, the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask utilizes a patented peptide complex and hydrolyzed wheat protein to target internal damage and improve elasticity. Other treatments focus on sealing the cuticle with ingredients like castor oil, argan oil, and shea butter to manage porosity and frizz in color-treated hair.
