Hair care experts discuss managing sebum and oiliness

Hair oiliness varies significantly depending on hair type and scalp biology. While sebum is essential for maintaining hair health and shine, an excess can lead to a greasy and lifeless appearance.

Trichologist and hairstylist Annabel Kingsley notes that individuals with fine hair often experience faster oil buildup. This is because fine hair tends to have more hair follicles per square inch of scalp, resulting in a higher concentration of oil-producing sebaceous glands. Consequently, those with fine hair may feel the need to wash their hair daily to avoid sticky, flat roots.

In contrast, individuals with thick or naturally curly hair can often go several days without washing while still appearing fresh. Factors such as genetics, environment, lifestyle, and personal habits all play a role in how quickly hair becomes oily.
