Hair care: managing split ends and maintaining shine

Maintaining hair health involves understanding the structure of the hair fiber and protecting it from external factors such as weather, pollution, and stress. Split ends, technically known as trichoptilosis, occur when the hair tip becomes excessively dry and divides due to a reduction in the protective outer layer of the hair strand.

Common causes of hair damage include direct sun exposure, wind, harsh brushing, and the use of chemical dyes or perms. Frequent use of heat tools like blow dryers and flat irons without adequate protection also accelerates breakage. To manage split ends, specialists recommend cutting hair at least three times a year, reducing heat tool usage, and utilizing hydrating products containing keratin.

Additionally, hair may appear dull even after washing if the cuticle is damaged or if there is product buildup. Common mistakes that strip hair of its shine include washing with excessively hot water, which causes dryness, and using excessive amounts of shampoo, which can remove natural oils necessary for flexibility and appearance.
