Hair care techniques for managing frizz and oiliness
Experts provide guidance on managing hair texture and cleanliness in response to humidity and natural oil production.
To combat frizz caused by humidity, specialist Georgina Buscaglia suggests “shielding” the hair. This involves using emollients, conditioners, and serums to create a cosmetic coating that smooths the hair surface, reduces friction, and helps align fibers. This process helps prevent the hair from absorbing environmental moisture, which typically causes fibers to separate and expand.
Regarding oily hair, trichologist Abbey Yung explains that air-drying can make hair appear dirtier more quickly. When hair dries without heat, the cuticle remains open, allowing oils to spread along the hair shaft. In contrast, using a hair dryer with tempered air can help close the cuticle and lift the roots, maintaining a sense of freshness for longer.
Recommended maintenance routines include using a deep-cleansing shampoo once a week, exfoliating the scalp with acids such as salicylic or mandelic acid to remove dead skin and excess oil, and avoiding heavy pre-shampoo oils if the scalp is prone to greasiness.
