Hair changes as indicators of underlying health conditions

Changes in hair density, texture, and color can serve as indicators of various underlying health conditions. While hair changes are often influenced by genetics, stress, and nutrition, they can also signal specific medical issues.

Thinning or dry hair may be associated with thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism. Additionally, excessive hair loss can be a symptom of iron deficiency or anemia. Brittle hair has been identified as a potential sign of Cushing's syndrome, a rare condition caused by excess cortisol levels.

Regarding pigmentation, while graying is a natural part of aging, oxidative stress and prolonged stress can accelerate the process by affecting pigment-producing cells. Dermatologist Dr. Paradi Mirmirani notes that oxidative stress occurs when free radicals damage cells and tissues, potentially interfering with regeneration processes.
