Hair coloring guidance for women aged 70 and older

For women in their 70s, hair fibers become more porous and thinner, causing faster pigment absorption and quicker wash‑out. Professionals advise testing porosity first, using lower‑volume oxidising agents, spacing colour sessions to at least five‑six weeks, and preferring gentle, ammonia‑free ton‑on‑ton or permanent formulas that do not over‑process the cuticle. Babylights or subtle grey‑beige highlights are recommended to add movement without the heavy “helmet” look of dark, uniform colour.

Women over 40 face similar melanin loss. Cosmetic experts warn against overly dark global colour, which can accentuate white roots and create a harsh facial contrast. Warm, luminous shades such as cinnamon gloss, “Cherry Cola” deep auburn, champagne‑blonde, or soft ash tones are suggested to brighten the complexion. Light accent colours may be applied sparingly to the tips or around the face. Because mature hair is drier and more porous, a hydration‑focused routine—sulfate‑free shampoo and weekly nourishing masks with vegetable oils—is essential to maintain colour integrity and hair health.
