Hair loss and thinning: Understanding causes and scalp care

Experts distinguish between hair loss and hair thinning, noting that while both affect appearance, they have different causes and progression patterns. Hair loss is often a temporary issue where hair enters a resting phase due to sudden triggers such as stress, illness, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, or seasonal shifts. In these cases, the follicles remain intact, allowing for regrowth once the trigger is removed.

In contrast, hair thinning is a progressive process involving the gradual miniaturization of hair strands, leading to a slow decrease in overall density. This is typically driven by long-term factors such as genetics, aging, chronic inflammation, and hormonal imbalances.

To manage seasonal hair shedding, specialists recommend maintaining consistent scalp hygiene. Avoiding infrequent washing is crucial, as oil and dirt buildup can harm follicles. Recommended practices include massaging the scalp gently with fingertips, using lukewarm or cool water to prevent dryness, and utilizing fortifying shampoos designed to strengthen weak fibers and improve density.
