Hair loss biotechs emerge as new Wall Street growth trade

Investors are increasingly targeting biotechnology companies developing new treatments for pattern hair loss, a market that has seen no newly approved therapies since the late 1990s. The sector is drawing comparisons to the recent surge in GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, as companies race to provide alternatives to existing options like minoxidil and finasteride, which are associated with side effects such as heart palpitations and reduced sex drive.

Key players in this emerging trade include Veradermics, which is developing an oral pill and has seen its stock rise nearly 500% since its February IPO, and Absci, which is testing an injectable treatment. Eli Lilly has also expressed interest in the space through a $40 million investment in Absci. Meanwhile, Cosmo Pharmaceuticals has reported positive late-stage results for a topical solution.

Despite the investor enthusiasm, none of these companies currently have an approved product, with the earliest regulatory filings not expected before 2027.
