Hair loss causes and available treatment options
Hair loss can be driven by a combination of hereditary factors, aging, stress, illnesses, medications, and hormonal changes. According to dermatologist Dr. Dawn Davis of the Mayo Clinic, while losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, certain patterns—such as receding hairlines in men or thinning at the crown in women—often indicate pattern baldness.
Common treatments include over-the-counter options like minoxidil, which is available in liquid, foam, and shampoo forms. Minoxidil can help maintain existing hair and may promote the growth of approximately 10% of lost hair. Oral minoxidil may also be prescribed for both men and women.
In addition to medical treatments, various cosmetic products aim to address hair thinning. Some professional-grade serums utilize ingredients such as caffeine to stimulate scalp microcirculation, ginger root for protection against external aggressions, and aminexil to help anchor hair to the scalp and reduce fallout.
