Hair loss patterns and Alopecia Areata awareness

Hair loss can be a natural process, but sudden, localized patches in circular patterns may indicate Alopecia Areata. This autoimmune disease affects approximately 2% of the global population and can cause hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows, beard, or body. If left untreated, hair may not regrow, and the condition can lead to psychological impacts such as anxiety, depression, and social isolation. In Lima, Peru, the prevalence of Alopecia Areata is estimated to represent between 0.7% and 3.5% of all dermatology consultations.

To maintain hair health and prevent breakage, experts recommend distinguishing between hair falling from the root and fiber breakage caused by heat tools, tight hairstyles, or chemical treatments. Effective hair care habits include washing with lukewarm water, massaging the scalp gently with fingertips, and avoiding aggressive brushing. Nutritional deficiencies and hormonal changes are also significant internal factors that contribute to hair weakening.
