Scalp and Skin Sun Protection Recommendations Emphasize UV Risks and Care

Health experts warn that many people overlook the scalp when applying sunscreen, leaving it vulnerable to intense UV exposure. UV radiation can cause scalp burns, hair discoloration, split ends, breakage and dryness, as noted by hairstylist Sam McKnight. To protect the scalp, specialists recommend using UV‑blocking sprays that do not leave a greasy feel and re‑applying protection every two to three hours during prolonged outdoor activity.

Research into skin reactions shows that genetic factors, such as melanin levels and variations in the MC1R gene, determine whether an individual tans or burns. Lighter‑skinned individuals are more prone to painful sunburns, while darker skin offers some natural protection. Both groups risk skin damage that can accelerate aging and increase skin‑cancer risk.

For those already experiencing sunburn, natural remedies such as aloe vera gel, cool compresses, diluted apple‑cider vinegar, coconut oil, yogurt, oatmeal paste, cucumber slices, chamomile tea, and diluted essential oils can soothe irritation and support skin recovery. Adequate hydration and rest are also advised.
