Hairy crab market sees price split between small and premium varieties
The Chinese hairy crab market is experiencing significant price polarization following the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. While some reports suggested a market collapse, data indicates a split between small-to-medium crabs and high-end premium specimens.
Small-to-medium crabs have seen prices drop sharply. In Shanghai, female crabs from Gaochun are being sold for as little as 5 to 6 yuan each, while 3-tael male crabs from Taihu Lake are priced at 10 yuan. In Wuhan, some markets have offered promotions of 5 jin (approximately 2.5kg) for 100 yuan.
In contrast, the market for large, premium crabs remains strong. High-quality local crabs weighing over half a jin maintain an ex-farm price of approximately 150 yuan per crab, with pairs selling for 300 yuan. Supply for female crabs over 3 taels and male crabs over 4 taels remains tight.
Experts attribute the increased supply to favorable summer growing conditions, which allowed crabs to molt more frequently, resulting in an estimated 10% increase in total production. Additionally, a shift in consumer behavior from corporate gifting to personal consumption, combined with a cooling of speculative crab voucher trading, is driving the market toward a focus on quality over quantity.
